A reporter from Mashable.com wrote an article entitled "10 Ways to Optimize Your iPad for Kids With Special Needs" that has some nice recommendations for tweeking your iPad to your child's specific needs. I am still interested in learning more about key-guards and this was the first article that I have seen mentions a DIY keyguard for the iPad which I know will explore further.
Check out the article here.

I can hardly find words to express how thankful I am for posting this information! very useful!
I've worked with kids with autism for awhile and the iPad has been an incredible tool to get them engaged with learning. However, I frequently found myself trying to keep them focused on the conent rather than hitting the menu buttons in an app. iOS 6 "Guided Access" has helped, but is still too difficult to use. That's why I created and have been using a mechanical solution called the PerseveGuard (perseveguard.com). As a result of using this tool, the engangment of my clients has significantly increased.
